Cancelled scrip notes which were issued to Métis by the Department of the Interior in exchange for the extinguishment of certain land claims. These notes were issued "to the bearer," and could be applied to the purchase of, or as a down payment on, any Dominion lands which were open for entry.
The scrip was awarded to Métis heads of families who were residents of Manitoba on 15 July, 1870. The scrip was in the amount of $160 and was awarded either as eight $20 scrip notes (numbers 0002 to 8000) or as a single $160 scrip note (numbers 10001 to 12250). As well, a third sequence of numbers (9001 to 9999) was issued in miscellaneous amounts to the heirs of deceased heads of families.
