The Pioneer Kitchen

A collection of photographs and information from early days on the Prairies. On the cover is Hilda Swedberg, a Scandinavian-American woman who lived in the Marchwell district of Saskatchewan. Her kitchen was "of a very high standard for the time (circa 1900)."

"When the Icelanders immigrated to New Iceland (Manitoba's Interlake region) in 1875, it was with a great make-do spirit that the women had to adapt their recipes and cooking methods to the indigenous ingredients of their new environment" (p. 14).
