Crowfoot addressing the Marquess of Lorne at Blackfoot Crossing, Bow River
1887, by Sydney Prior Hall

Hall's sketch documents the historic meeting between Chief Crowfoot of the Blackfoot First Nation and Governor General Campbell. Sheltered from the prairie sun by an awning, the Governor General's entourage seems unperturbed as the Blackfoot leader holds out an empty tin cup to symbolize the destitution of his people. The deplorable conditions that Chief Crowfoot so forcibly brought to the attention of the Governor General eventually led to a number of First Nations joining the Métis rebellion in 1885, although Crowfoot was not among them.
