des Bois Brules

This ballad of the battle at Seven Oaks was composed
by a Métis witness following the battle and was
recounted to William Coltman by Pierre Falcon. Having
primarily an oral culture (few written records), ballads
were the chief means by which the Métis preserved
their history. It is possible that many ballads like
this did not get passed down through Métis oral
culture and now have been lost to history.
