About the Exhibition
This exhibition contains fifty photographs by the French photographer
Paul-Émile Miot (1827-1900) taken during three hydrographic and fishing
assistance campaigns by the French Navy between 1857 and 1859. Miot took
these photographs along the shores of Newfoundland, Cape Breton Island and
the French islands of St. Pierre and Miquelon.
The collection provides information on fishing activities in the nineteenth
century and documents the methods of drying and storing cod before exporting
it to Europe. It also contains unique panoramic views and eight portraits of
Aboriginals of the Mi'kmaq Nation which are of exceptional ethnographic value.
For those who would like more on the topic, this exhibition also presents a
biography and links to other sources with either photographs by Paul-Émile
Miot or related information.
Technical note: When printing, select landscape orientation.
