William Lyon Mackenzie King was born in Berlin (later renamed Kitchener), Ontario on December 17, 1874. The son of a prominent lawyer, and descendent of William Lyon Mackenzie leader of the 1837 Rebellion in Upper Canada, set him on a path towards civil service and eventually politics. His skills as a labour consultant and politician led him to become the leader of the Liberal Party in 1919.
