Making the Treaty

Poster announcing the itinerary for the Treaty 8 Commission

Missionaries, traders and police posted this broadside in public places over the late summer and fall of 1898.

The federal government thought it would provide some credibility to its claim that a treaty commission was on its way to Athabasca. The minister was well aware of Native skepticism to the government’s announcement of a treaty and was worried that the Treaty Commission would not be taken seriously.
