Portée et contenu

Series consists of miscellaneous files maintained by the Medical Services Branch. The records include original bound ledgers concerning the Tracadie Lazaretto, 1900-1908, and the Hobbema Indian Agency, 1885-1894. There are also memoranda, articles and miscellaneous records relating to the history and treatment of leprosy in Canada and other countries, the history of the Quarantine Service of Canada, and the International Sanitary Conventions of 1912 and 1926. Included, as well, are conference papers and articles, 1938-1939, by Dr. Chester P. Brown, Chief of the Division of Quarantine, Immigration Medical and Sick Mariners' Service outlining the work of his division and his department. There are also articles concerning health problems in the northern territories of the U.S.S.R., 1954, the vaccination of Indian infants against tuberculosis in Saskatchewan, 1949, as well as a map (n.d.) of the Caraquet area of New Brunswick. Also included as part of this series are 6 architectural drawings of a proposed immigration detention building to be built over the C.P.R. baggage shed in West Saint John, N.B.

Cartographic material : Blue and black ink on tracing paper. Railway indicated in red ink. Some annotations in pencil. Architectural drawings : Five blueprints and one pencil on tracing paper.

Note sur l'état de conservation
Cartographic material : Item has been conserved but remains extremely fragile. Sheets include large tears. Architectural drawings : Some items have tears along the edges.

Historique de la conservation
These records, some predating the department, were found in the Resource Centre of the Medical Services Branch, Tunney's Pasture, Ottawa. The map was transferred to the National Map Collection from Federal Archives Division, RG19, Vol. 2355 in February 1983 (Mikan 42293). The provenance of the architectural drawings is uncertain. The drawings were produced by the Canadian Pacific Railway and the Dept. of Health.

Note structurée de contenu
This tracing of part of a map of northeastern New Brunswick shows the line of the Caraquet Railway and the proposed extension to deep water. The map shows the area north of Tracadie, site of the leprosarium run by the federal government, and includes Shippegan Island, Caraquet Harbour and Island, Pokseudie Island, Saint Simons and Pokemouche (Inkerman).
