Scope and content
Series consists of photographs which depict the activities and personnel of the Medical Services Branch of the National Department of Health and Welfare, the Indian and Health Services Branch, and Immigration Medical Services, across Canada and in Europe. Subjects include: photos of nursing station, health centres, hospitals, facilities at Lekhaven, Germany, 1922 and Gdynia, Poland, 1938-1939; Quarantine Services including smallpox, ca. 1906 and leprosy victims, 1921-1927; photos of northern sanitation; Inuit, Indian, and Eskimo patients, families and dwellings. Photographs by Richard Harrington, National Film Board; Val D'or Photograph Studio; Norman Studio, Chilliwack B.C.; Photogelatine Engraving Co., Toronto.; National Film Board of Canada; A.L. Kirkby, Lac La Ronge, Saskatchewan; John A. Rodriguez, Sept. Iles, P.Q.; Ralph Bower; Foto-Hernried; Hans Hammarskiold (Swedish); Swetnam & Grier (Missouri); James V. Sproat; Joe Stone Photographers, Fredericton, N.B.; Foto-Strauss-Rutterdam, and various unidentified public servants working for the medical services across Canada. There is also one photograph album, which contains 134 photos of ships, settlements and inhabitants along the coasts of Labrador and Baffin Island. Included are views of RMS Nascopie, Cartwright Labrador, MV Mont Murray, Hebron Labrador, Frobisher Bay, Saglek Bay, Inuit settlements and activities. These photographs are by Richard Harrington.
