Scope and content
Waiting for a taste are Nadine, 4, left; Darusia, 2; and Patricia, 6, who tries to get a 'finger in the pie'. Ukrainians celebrate Christmas according to the Julian calendar, on January 6. Their observance of the festival begins when the first star appears on Christmas Eve (January 5), and the whole family sits down to a meal of twelve meatless dishes, honouring the twelve Apostles of our Lord. Immigrants who have come to Canada from many different countries have brought with them the legends and traditions of their own people to add rich threads of colour to the pattern of Canadian life. Most colourful of all the traditions are those that relate to the observance of Christmas.
