Scope and content
Series consists of fourteen hundred and forty-six works of art, ca. 1911-1950, consisting of images prepared for the "Picture Gallery of Canadian History", published by Ryerson Press (3 vols. 1942-1950) and other reconstructed images of Canadian history. Many are copies of works by other artists and historical illustrations. Also available are portraits, historical events, costumes, artifacts, geographical locations, fortification plans, and military paraphenalia. Series also contains documentary films on the oil industry in Canada, life in Newfoundland, and the Canadian Rockies, 1947-1968. Material has been divided into a media specific series entitled Moving images. Series also contains textual material, consisting of a national opinion survey, prepared for Imperial Oil Limited by Canadian Fact Limited, 1961, as well as a memorandum on the survey. Series consists of one photograph, 1962, depicting a presentation of scale models of two Junkers aircraft to the National Museum in Ottawa by Imperial Oil Limited; Imperial representative E.L. Baillie presented the models to K.M. Molson, curator of the National Aviation Museum. There are also forty-two copies of photographs, n.d., depicting the Air Transport division of Imperial Oil Limited, and its activities and personnel, including T.M. Reid; flights from Harbour Grace, Nfld.; and a portrait of J.A.D. McCurdy. Also included are eight prints, n.d., consisting of a portfolio of Canadian Historical drawings of C.W. Jeffreys and one 1938 Imperial Oil map of eastern Canada.

Biography / Administrative history
Imperial Oil Company Limited was established in 1880 as a union of Canadian Oil producers. Originally located in London, Ontario, Imperial Oil Company moved its operations to Petrolia, Ontario in 1883. Thereafter, Imperial Oil established twenty-three branch offices and six refineries from coast to coast. In 1899, following the sale of a majority interest to Standard Oil of New Jersey, Imperial took over Standard Oil assets in Canada and moved its headquarters to Sarnia, Ontario. The company was renamed Imperial Oil Ltd. in 1959. In 1988 they purchased Texaco Canada Inc. Today, Imperial Oil Ltd. has its headquarters in Toronto, Ontario. They are a subsidiary of Exxon Mobil Canada Ltd., and a parent of International Petroleum Company Ltd.
Additional information
Material in accessions 1966-0007 (MISA), 1972-0112 (MISA), 1973-0191 (MISA), and 1973-0189 (MISA) was part of the CFIs Canadian Film Archive transfer to MISA on May 12, 1975. The collection name and accession number represent the original donor/deposit date with CFI. Additional moving image material was acquired by the National Archives of Canada from Imperial Oil Limited, Toronto, Ontario between 1976 and 1990.
