Green Thurman: Runaway Slave

Green Thurman was born a slave in Missouri in 1833. After failing to purchase his freedom, he escaped to Canada with the aid of his friend Isaac Renfrew. In this section, you will find Thurman's memoirs of his life in bondage and his eventual escape from slavery to a life of freedom in Canada. His reminiscences were recorded by a resident of Lucan in Middlesex County, Ontario, where the fugitives finally made their home. Thurman died in 1918.
