At the time, Newfoundland was not a part of Canada and, as part of the British Army, the Royal Newfoundland Regiment had a very different existence from most Canadian units. It was a part of the ill-fated British expedition to Gallipoli, and was almost entirely wiped out at Beaumont-Hamel on the Somme in 1916.
