Saskatchewan’s first Memorial Cup win came in 1925, when the Regina Pats won two games in a row against Aura Lee, the Ontario champions. Ken Doraty, the seemingly good-natured scrapper mentioned in this Regina Leader story, went on to a fourteen-year professional career, including brief major league stints with Chicago, Toronto and Detroit.
Easterners Take Lead at Start and Tie Up Again In Second Period, but Pats Slap in Last Three; Free-for-all Fight Breaks Out in Middle Session; Doraty, Cranstoun, Morrison And Acaster Are Goal-Getters
(By Norman B. Albert)
ARENA GARDENS, TORONTO, March 25. -- Game to the core, courageous and admittedly the finest hockey outfit that ever came from out of the golden west, Regina Pats crashed their way to a 5-2 victory tonight over Aura Lee of Toronto. Back to the west goes the Memorial Trophy and the Canadian junior hockey title.
Regina Pats won the first game Monday night, 2-1, in ten minutes overtime. They left no doubt of their superiority tonight. There was a fight, a regular free-for-all, plenty of bumping and bodying, but underlying it all was the wonderful speed and finishing strength of the stocky prairie kids. Cunning in goal, Ingram on left wing, Doraty, Morrison, Cranstoun, Fuller, Dowie, Acaster -- in fact, everybody on the Regina squad -- played a star game.
Hats off to the new junior hockey champions of Canada!
The Pats had too much speed for the O.H.A. champions. Their defensive hockey was almost perfect, while on the attack they broke so fast that Aura Lee had little chance to overtake the puck-carriers.
With the score 1-0 against the Pats, McIlwaine was ruled off for tripping Acaster and while he was on the penalty bench the Abbott Cup holders ran in two goals, showing ability to take advantage of their opportunities. While Aura Lee tied the score early in the second period while Ingram was serving a penalty, Cranstoun's goal gave the Pats the edge in the score when the teams left the ice at the end of the second period.
After that there was little doubt as to the ultimate winner. The game was the fastest and most brilliant junior exhibition played in Toronto this season.
Fight But Soon Forget It
It was a hectic game from start to finish. Just after Parks had tied the score for Aura Lee in less than 30 seconds after the start of the second period, Shrimp McPherson and Ken Doraty got into a fight and before it was over every player on the both teams, including the subs was out on the ice standing toe to toe exchanging blows.
The police finally went into the affair and when it was all over Shrimp McPherson and Doraty were in the penalty box, having a good laugh and apologizing to each other. When Regina took the lead near the close of the period on a score by Cranstoun who swiped in the rebound off Morrison's long drive from the side, the goal was disputed and the goal umpire changed.
The Pats gave an even better display of perfect defensive hockey than they did on Monday. Aura Lee, did not have as nearly many wide open chances to score as they did in the first game.
The Pats' system is one developed by the great "Newsy" Lalonde and it was so effective that Aura Lee were puzzled throughout.
