Canadians throughout history have conceived of the country's numerous bodies of water in many different ways. Lakes, rivers and oceans have served as sources of food, as spiritual foundations and as essential transportation routes. They have also been regarded as sources of commerce, recreation and tourism, and even as barriers to exploration and trade.
