Gallery - Understanding Difference

Photographs informed Canadians about the characteristics of racial difference. By collecting photographs of ethnic "others," people attempted to organize, and therefore manage, the concept of an ethnically diverse population. These photographs were taken by mainstream institutions or private, Anglo-Canadian individuals grappling with the contributions that new populations were making to Canada.
