Gallery - The Idea of Agency

Photographs are immensely powerful documents whose information can be used for political ends. This portrait for example, served as part of a larger effort to record the Northwest Rebellion's defeat.

There are a number of questions that can help us to better evaluate how photographs were complicit with colonial power. Many of these questions have to do with the notion of agency, or the sitter's ability to effect change or to intentionally shape his or her world.
