While portraits of the Dionne Quintuplets or of Ziegfeld Follies girl Norma Shearer would have been mass produced, sold to eager fans and collected, the portrait of Annie Henry, or the ambrotype of an anonymous woman from 1860, served as objects of precious remembrance, and as private, family-oriented mementos or souvenirs.
