Library and Archives Canada has thousands of unidentified and unattributed portraits in its collection. But despite these documentary deficiencies, anonymous photographs can still convey all kinds of information: they can provide insight into a time period, illustrate a particular style, or furnish visual clues about cultural trends or subtler undercurrents in society.
