Search screens

There are two search options. The first allows you to choose a document within a specific period of time, while the second lets you search for words, phrases and dates in the database.

Browse By Date

• The Browse By Date function displays a comprehensive list of the available publications, in chronological order.
• Choose the date range to display publications that fall within that time period. By default, the selection covers the period between January 1, 1759 and December 31, 1900, which covers all the documents.
• When you have entered your search terms, press "Submit".
• Use the hyperlinked titles within this list to access the full description of the item. See "View image" to proceed.

Search

This function allows searching using keywords or expressions, dates and document types.

Fields

Search term(s):

Enter keyword(s) or phrase(s) that you want to search.

Date:

• The first field is reserved for the year, which goes from 1759 to 1900 or choose the default "All".
• The second field is reserved for the month. Only one month can be chosen at a time or choose the default "All".
• The third field is reserved for the day. Only one day can be chosen at a time or choose the default "All"

By default, the selection covers the period between January 1, 1759 and December 31, 1900, which includes all the documents.

Type of document:

This field allows you to restrict your search by selecting a type of document:

• All documents
• Circulars
• Postal guides
• Publications

When you have entered your search terms, press "Submit".

How to interpret the results

Choose a document

If a search is successful, a page containing the results will be displayed. The total number of references found is indicated in a sentence at the top of this page, along with the search terms used for this query.

Under this sentence, a table presents the results obtained, mentioning the date, title and page number for each result. At the top and bottom of the page, you will find navigation allowing you to move within the results pages, if necessary.

View the description

Use the hyperlinked titles within the results page(s) to access the full description of the item.

View image

Use the link "View Image" to see the digitised image in either GIF or ZOOMIFY formats.

• You will find navigation below the image allowing you to move within the pages of the chosen document, if applicable.
• The ZOOMIFI format allows the user to change the orientation of the page, to enlarge or shrink the image, by use of the icons found below the image.
• Printing images is best done using the GIF format.
