The Canadian Pacific Railway land grant in Manitoba and the North-West Territories
ca. 1882

In 1881, the Canadian government adopted an American system of land grants as a means of subsidising railway construction. This map shows the western lands granted to the Canadian Pacific Railway. In addition to the land shown here, which amounted to an area the size of England, the railway also received lands for rights-of-way, stations, and yard works. The Canadian Pacific Railway published this map in an effort to encourage immigrants to purchase its homestead lands.
