Detailed Description

The Canadian immigration office in London, England
1911

The Department of the Interior's immigration campaign included the establishment of this office in the heart of busy downtown London, England. The office was responsible for setting up its own programs to attract immigrants from the United Kingdom. One such program that it sponsored was an essay-writing contest for school children. The grand prize was free passage for the child's family to Canada and a free homestead. The program proved to be so popular that immigration agents from Australia copied it.
